70 Years of Porsche Sports Cars

Sports car construction over the past seven decades is inextricably linked to the Porsche brand. The 70 Years of Porsche Sports Cars exhibition presents the stories and milestones through which Porsche has decisively shaped and driven the development of sports cars from 1948 to this day.
Why is there such a fascination for Porsche sports cars? Seven landmark cars provide exciting insights into the history of the brand and give a multifaceted overview of the “Porsche principle”. At the forefront are Porsche’s outstanding achievements in sports car development over the past 70 years — from the legendary Porsche 356 “No.1” Roadster in 1948 to the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo.

Porsche is one of the most successful sports car brands in the world. A status that the company owes in particular to the businessman and visionary Ferry Porsche. At the end of the 1940s, his pioneering spirit paved the way for both innovative sports car development and the values and ideals which still define the Porsche brand to this day.
Even the first Porsche automobile proved to be a true sports car. Designed according to the ideas of Ferry Porsche, the open-top two-seater with the title of Porsche 356 "No.1” was approved for use on public roads on June 8, 1948. The legendary sports car included special features such as the hand-made aluminium body, a steel lattice tube frame and a VW four-cylinder flat engine modified by Porsche. Thanks to its mid-engine concept, low weight and redesigned cylinder heads, the Roadster featured impressive agility — and was a real joy to drive.

The Porsche 911 is the epitome of the sports car and represents a sense of freedom and individuality. Light, fast and an everyday usability; Porsche's sports car icon has fascinated a dedicated fan base for over 50 years. Both its dynamic power delivery and its unmistakable design evoke an immediate emotional response for sports car fans.
May 11, 2017 - In the Porsche plant in Zuffenhausen, the workforce waits with bated breath as the one-millionth Porsche 911 rolls off the assembly line. A Porsche 911 Carrera S in Irish Green. The anniversary model is definitely a Porsche in the classical mode. Numerous small details, such as the wooden steering wheel and the historical crest on the bonnet, invoke the first Porsche 911 F-models from 1963. However, with engine performance of 450 hp it is over three times more powerful than its ancestors. The only problem: This Porsche 911 is not for sale.

Porsche's track record in the field of motorsport is long. But the quest for victories and records is not merely an end in itself for those at Zuffenhausen. On the contrary, Motorsport is the top driver of technology and innovation at Porsche. In the past, just as today, the experience gathered on the race
track filters through to series production and forms the basis for the sports car expertise from Zuffenhausen.
To test out new performance limits, Porsche continuously seeks out the extreme. The Porsche 917/20 coupe is the best example of this. The 1971 racer, with its characteristic combination of short and long-tail versions, is impressive not only because of its exceptional performance data, but also its spectacular design. Its pink paintwork — labeled with different cuts of meat — caused a sensation in the world of motorsport. From then on, the 917/20 was affectionately known amongst racing fans as the “Pink Pig”. What a pity that one of Porsche’s most famous vehicles still remains a one-off.

Porsche's innovative strength lies primarily in its willingness to step off the beaten path and dare to venture into the new. With this mindset, Porsche has successfully brought fresh momentum to sports car construction for over 70 years, as both a manufacturer and an engineering partner.
Porsche has regularly opened up new chapters in sports car construction through its numerous pioneering achievements, which serve as a testament to the company's engineering expertise. Whether the conception of mid-engine models, the development of high-performance turbo drives or the adaptation of transaxle technology for sports cars, Porsche has repeatedly reinforced its position as a trailblazer and trendsetter in the industry.
To stay on the road to economic success, the sports car manufacturer does not shy away from making bold decisions. The best example of this is the development of the Porsche Boxster, which brought about a revival of Speedster vehicles with mid-engine concept during the 1990s. The Porsche Boxster successfully brought Porsche AG, which had been struggling financially, back into the black.

Since 1969, Porsche has created a variety of new sports cars interpretations, in addition to the 911 model line. The company is responding to changes in the Zeitgeist, translating trends and customers' desires into inspiring car concepts with customized equipment variants. Today, the Porsche portfolio covers a spectrum which, from classic roadster and sporty premium limousine to SUV, fulfils all individual requirements for comfort, performance and spaciousness.
In 1966, Porsche received a development order from VW for a sports car. The result was an interpretation with the hallmarks of a typical Porsche: lightweight, with a puristic, mid-engine design. A four-cylinder model was intended to be sold as a Volkswagen, and a six-cylinder flat-engine version as a Porsche. Under the name 914/6, the Porsche already entered series production in 1969. On winding roads in particular, this Roadster delivered impressive performance thanks to its mid-engine construction with extremely agile handling. Another defining characteristic was the roll-over bar construction with removable roof, which was already being used in the Porsche 911 Targa.

Traditionally, the "Porsche principle" means allowing innovative technologies and individual customer demands to flow into new vehicle concepts. The Porsche range now includes five model lines with more than fifteen models, all of which share a common factor: sportiness.
With the new Panamera Sport Turismo with plug-in hybrid drive, Porsche shows how sportiness, comfort and efficiency can be combined to create a unique saloon. The Porsche with four-liter V8 turbo engine and electric motor delivers a system performance of 680 hp. Despite this, its average fuel consumption is only 3.0 liters per 100 kilometers. The sports car can travel almost 50 kilometres using purely electric power. The Panamera’s high level of everyday practicality is also highlighted through its all-wheel drive, state-of-the-art assistance systems such as Porsche InnoDrive and large tailgate with low loading edge.

Tradition and innovation. Revolution and evolution. For Porsche, opposites are not necessarily contradictions. The sports car manufacturer's new, ground-breaking vehicle concepts therefore always reflect the experiences, values and principles of the past. Porsche remains committed to this principle, even with its current vision for the sports cars of the future.
At the IAA 2015, Porsche introduced the company's first purely electric sports car — the Mission E. The concept car, with an unmistakable Porsche design, features the first 800-V system and a visionary operating concept. The battery, which is built into the vehicle floor, can achieve a range of over 500 kilometers. With the vehicle's 800-Volt architecture, Porsche has optimized weight and package, and the Mission E can recharge 400 kilometers-worth of electric range in around 15 minutes. The Mission E will go into series production in 2019. Porsche is investing around 1 billion Euros in the project, creating more than 1.200 additional jobs.
